THE BABOUCHE, EMBLEMATIC SLIPPER OF THE MOROCCAN CRAFT INDUSTRY

The design of the Moroccan babouche is a delicate work which requires many stages and traditional tools of manufacture. To shape different types and forms of babouches, the babouchier craftsman must show creativity, precision and dexterity. He also calls upon ancestral manufacturing techniques transmitted from generation to generation. Indeed, this typical and authentic Moroccan shoe carries a very strong cultural identity. If it is an integral part of the habits and customs of Moroccans, it also permanently feeds this rich and living heritage that is found in the heart of Moroccan art. Even today, the Moroccan babouche is hand sewn and benefits from a natural tanning. As comfortable as an indoor slipper as an everyday shoe, the Moroccan slipper can be worn indoors or outdoors and has conquered the world for its practicality and comfort. This traditional leather shoe is divided into two main families, the men's moroccan slippers or royal babouche and the Berber slippers or Dambira babouche. The city babouche is a traditional babouche that is distinguished by its pointed toe and its refined style. The Bedouin babouche has a round or square toe and a thick rubber sole more adapted to the lifestyles of rural populations.

FROM THE TANNERY TO THE BABOUCHE

As with all traditional leather products, the process of making the handmade babouche begins in the tannery and has been practiced for centuries. In the hands of Moroccan tanners, the rawhide is first cleaned, washed, treated, soaked and kneaded to remove residues of grease, flesh and fur and to break down the strength of the leather. The leather material can then be colored in a wide range of dyes to meet the needs of the market and the demands of Moroccan craftsmen. Other techniques, just as old and perfectly mastered, allow to make the skins shinier and to obtain the desired flexibility. The leather can then be rinsed and dried in the sun before being sold to the babouchier who can then start cutting the skins ready for use in his workshop or his shop. All that remains is for him to express all his art by creating belghas and cherbils of very good quality. The work of the tanners will have required about thirty days before the manufacture of the babouche.

THE NATURAL DYEING OF LEATHER IN THE PUREST MOROCCAN TRADITION

If the ancestral handicraft work of the babouchier is often admired, the ancestral rites of the traditional Moroccan tanneries are also remarkable. It is in a multitude of basins that the Moroccan tanners carry out the dyes of leather aqui will be used for the manufacture of the babouches, Moroccan sandals and other boots made from kilim carpet. The vision of these stone pits dedicated to the work of leather constitutes an extraordinary spectacle. The process of dyeing leather is itself rooted in Moroccan tradition and culture. It uses 100% natural pigments from plants or spices such as poppy flower, indigo leaf, saffron crocus, henna tree or mint. It allows us to obtain all kinds of high quality finished leathers renowned for their unique texture and their shine that lasts over time. Marrakech can rightly pride itself on hosting, at the Bab Debbagh gate, one of the oldest and most famous tanneries in Morocco..

MOROCCAN LEATHER WORK, A TRADITIONAL CRAFT

The technique of working leather is inseparable from Moroccan craftsmanship and its know-how allows to transform all kinds of leather: cow, sheep, goat, camel ... Moreover, the word "maroquin", which refers to the tanned goat and sheep skin, gave its name to leather goods. In this sense, the Berber people are very representative of this meticulous work done through the centuries on the Moroccan shoe. Nevertheless, according to fashions and inspirations, the job of babouchier has been able to adapt, and the styles of the traditional shoes from Moroccan craftsmanship have evolved over the years. Today, men, women, boys and girls can accessorize their outfits with handmade Moroccan leather shoes that match their look. Babouches, half shoe half slipper, Moroccan ballerinas, mules, Moroccan sandals, flip-flops and other leather and kilim boots are all authentic artisanal products that are displayed in plain leathers, patterns, with or without heel, decorated with embroidered sequins ... Because there is something for everyone. Browse our online store and discover our complete collection of ethnic shoes to convince yourself.

Babouchescuir.com, your online store for Moroccan leather slippers and shoes

Morocco has been perpetuating its ancestral know-how in the manufacture of Moroccan slippers for centuries. In the country, this traditional shoe also known under the name of "belgha", was formerly regarded as the everyday shoe without distinction of social class. The spearhead of Moroccan leather craftsmanship, it takes on different shapes, colors and ornaments depending on the region. City slipper with a pointed tip or Berber slipper with a square or round tip, the Moroccan slipper looks like a light and easy to wear slipper. It is as aesthetic with embroidery, sequins, fine pearls and gilding as in its refined version in black leather. The traditional shoe continues to be an essential accessory of traditional costumes and the djellaba in major events and religious festivals in Morocco. And at the same time, it is being reinvented to the point of making itself a place in ethnic fashion. Moroccan shoes have never been so popular. We wear them as slippers to snuggle at home or as comfortable flat shoes to go out with a trendy bohemian chic look. Women particularly like it in its cherbil version. This traditional shoe embroidered with silk or gold threads is even a fashion shoe and a feminine and elegant beauty accessory. By purchasing your hand-made slippers on Babouchescuir.com, you trust the most qualified slipper craftsmen of Marrakech. We market quality authentic traditional products and our unique pieces meet all tastes. Our slippers and Moroccan leather shoes are available in a wide variety of designs so that each client, man, woman or child, can express their own style.
